9th Annual WVTESOL Conference a Great Success
-- Conference Highlights --
Over 100 educators attended WVTESOL’s April, 2006 conference, "Climbing Mountains, Crossing Rivers, Connecting Valleys: Excellence in English Language Teaching in West Virginia." The Charles Town event included a pre-conference Friday Adult ESL training, a well-attended Friday evening reception, and a full day of speakers and workshops on Saturday. The quality and variety of presentations were wonderful leaving most who attended wishing they could be in several places at once.

Dr. Gil Garcia, a senior researcher at the U.S. Department of Education with a distinguished career in ESL, delivered the keynote speech and participated in events throughout the day. Dr. Stephen Nichols, Jefferson County Superintendent, delivered the greeting during our lunch at Avanti Restaurant. A business meeting and elections followed (see the updated website list of officers for the election results). |
The Martinsburg Journal highlighted the conference as the top news story in their on-line edition Sunday, April 9 carrying a front page headline, “Teachers Tackle ESL.” The article’s message was positive, but the challenges which ESL teachers face were given attention, along with the efforts of WVTESOL members to meet them.
